The Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall was built in 1915 and was considered to be an architectural masterpiece with a gorgeous oval copper dome. In 1945, the atomic bomb exploded just above this building and it melted the dome. The interior was destroyed, but the outer walls and dome can still be seen today.
After the war, residents of Hiroshima asked that the ruins be preserved as a reminder of the damage and havoc that war brings. In 1967, preservation efforts began, and the building became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. It is now known as the Atomic Bomb Dome or genbaku domu’ in Japanese.
