Búðir is a small, picturesque hamlet located on the southern coast of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula in Iceland, famous for its striking black church, Búðakirkja, and its unique natural beauty. Once a thriving fishing and trading post, Búðir now delights visitors with its scenic landscapes, including vast lava fields, sandy beaches, and the nearby Búðahraun nature reserve. The black sand beaches and lava formations are such a contrast against the surrounding mountains and the Snæfellsjökull glacier.
This is also a great area to see the northern lights! In Búðir, the Northern Lights offer a mesmerizing spectacle against the backdrop of its stark, rugged landscape. The village’s remote location on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, away from the light pollution of larger towns, provides an optimal viewing experience for this celestial phenomenon.
From late autumn to early spring, the aurora borealis paints the night sky with vibrant greens, pinks, and purples. This creates a magical contrast with the dark volcanic terrain and the distant, snow-capped peaks. The serene environment enhances the experience, making Búðir an excellent spot for capturing the beauty of the Northern Lights.
Búðakirkja, also known as the Black Church of Búðir, is a striking and historic church located on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula in Iceland. The church’s distinctive black exterior contrasts sharply with the surrounding natural landscape, including the lava fields and the nearby glacier.
Initially built in 1703, they reconstructed the church in 1987, maintaining its traditional appearance while incorporating modern materials.
A fun fact about Búðakirkja, the black church, is that it was originally constructed in the 1700s. It was later reconstructed in the 19th century by a remarkable woman, Steinunn Sveinsdóttir. She fought to rebuild it after they had dismantled it.
The door ring’s quote reads, “This church was built in 1848 without the support of the spiritual fathers.” Steinunn is buried in the church’s nearby historic graveyard.
We found this to be one of the best discoveries on our trip! The area is also home to the historic Lýsuhóll Farm. It dates back to the early settlement of Iceland and offers a glimpse into the region’s agricultural past. This wonderful guesthouse provides comfortable accommodations and horseback riding.
