Martha's Vineyard

Marthas Vineyard travel

You, no doubt, have heard tales of this illustrious island because of its beauty, immaculate beaches, great shopping, and its most famous residents, the Kennedys. However, there is so much more to Martha’s Vineyard than you know.

I usually rent a car upon landing in Boston and enjoy the beautiful drive to the Woods Hole Terminal.  From there  I catch the ferry to either Oak Bluffs or Tisdale. Ferries are available from Woods Hole or Hyannis directly to Oak Bluffs or Tisdale. Tickets for passengers and vehicles can be pre-purchased at Steamship Authority for your upcoming trip or last minute if you find that you have time and are in the area.

The best way to get around small sections of the island is by bike; the island is too large to bike the whole thing unless you are an avid biker. Oak Bluffs offers bike rental near the ferry port, and the other towns have plenty of rentals available as well. Public buses are also available.

Having a rental car that I take across on the ferry gives me the opportunity to visit the entire island unrestricted. Parking spaces are everywhere on Martha’s Vineyard. However, it is always a good idea to check with the hotel that you have chosen to make sure that they have parking available.

Lodging on Martha’s Vineyard

I love renting homes during my stay on Martha’s Vineyard. This gives me the ability to wash clothes and cook meals (which saves money); and the free, designated parking is an added bonus. I like using FlipKey or VRBO. These websites allow you to choose a location, the number of guests and other amenities such as a pool or beach access and they show you what is available during your proposed dates.

If you would rather stay in a hotel, so that you can enjoy room service, clean linens on a daily basis, or concierge service, I would suggest using or I have found both sites to be competitive in price and easy to use on the go because of their mobile apps. These apps keep your bookings available even if you are offline.

Harborside Inn

One of my favorite hotels is the Harborside Inn in Edgartown. It is affordable, beautiful, and has a wonderful pool. The property overlooks the harbor and boasts a patio with a fire pit, gorgeous reception, and wonderful customer service. The rooms are clean and well-appointed. Wheel Happy, is across the street from the Inn and can help assist with outfitting you with bikes for your island adventures.
