The Arctic Henge

The Arctic Henge, located in the small town of Raufarhöfn in northern Iceland, is a modern monument inspired by Norse mythology and folklore. Its construction began in 1996, spearheaded by local entrepreneur Erlingur Thoroddsen, with the goal of creating a major cultural and tourist attraction in the region.

The design of the Arctic Henge is based on ancient mythological concepts, particularly those found in the “Völuspá,” an Old Norse poem from the Poetic Edda. The structure is a large stone circle with four main gates and a central column, all aligned with the cardinal points and the path of the sun. Each of the gates represents a different dwarf from Norse mythology, corresponding to a cardinal direction and element, and the structure is designed to capture the light of the Midnight Sun during the summer solstice, casting shadows in specific alignments.

Though still a work in progress, the Arctic Henge is intended to be both a timekeeper and a place of reflection, symbolizing the connection between humanity and the cosmos. Location and Accessibility

• By Car: The Arctic Henge is situated about 80 kilometers (50 miles) from Húsavík. A town in northern Iceland, and approximately 200 kilometers (125 miles) from Akureyri, the largest city in the north. The drive from either location takes around 1.5 to 2 hours following Route 85 leading to Raufarhöfn.
• By Bus: Public transportation options are limited. It is advisable to rent a car or join a guided tour to visit the Arctic Henge.
• By Tour: Some tour operators in northern Iceland offer excursions to the Arctic Henge.

Best Time to Visit the Arctic Henge

Summer (June to August):

Enjoy the long daylight hours and milder weather. The midnight sun provides unique lighting conditions for photography and exploring the site.

Winter (December to February):

Experience the Arctic Henge amidst snow-covered landscapes. Winter offers the chance to see the Northern Lights, adding a magical dimension to your visit.

Spring and Autumn (March to May and September to November):

These shoulder seasons offer fewer crowds and beautiful landscapes, though weather can be more unpredictable. This was very true for our visit! We had extremely high winds and a lot of rain. You can tell from the photos it was less than ideal conditions.
