Þingvellir is famously situated between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. This means you can literally walk between two continents. Take a stroll through the Almannagjá Rift Valley, and you might even feel a slight tremor underfoot. Plus, where else can you boast about having one foot in Europe and the other in North America without needing a plane ticket?
For adventurous souls, diving or snorkeling in the Silfra fissure is an absolute must. The water is so clear you can see up to 330 feet; it feels like floating in space—but colder. The water, filtered through porous lava rock for decades, is also some of the purest you’ll ever drink. I haven’t done this. I am not a fan of being wet and cold, but I hear it is really cool… literally.
Þingvellir is not just about stunning scenery; it’s also the cradle of Icelandic democracy. The Althingi, the world’s oldest parliament, was established here in 930 AD. Visit the Law Rock (Lögberg), where chieftains once stood to address the crowds and enjoy the stunning views.
In many respects, this institution was remarkably progressive for its time. It aimed to maintain local control, resolve blood feuds through diplomacy, and even allowed women to seek divorce if they were dissatisfied in their marriages. However, in other ways, it was less advanced—for instance, witches were frequently tried and convicted at the Alþingi.
Þingvellir is home to Iceland’s largest natural lake, Þingvallavatn. Surrounded by volcanic mountains and lush greenery, it’s the perfect spot for a serene picnic or a leisurely hike. The lake is also teeming with fish, so if you enjoy fishing, cast a line and see what you can catch.
Þingvellir boasts an array of hiking trails that cater to all levels of fitness and adventure. Explore the paths that wind through moss-covered lava fields, past crystal-clear streams, and up to scenic viewpoints. And if you’re lucky, you might even spot an Icelandic fox or two. It feels like you are walking through Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings.
For geology enthusiasts, Þingvellir is a treasure trove of fascinating formations. From lava fields and volcanic craters to tectonic rifts and glacial valleys, the park offers a smorgasbord of geological wonders. Keep an eye out for Peningagjá, also known as the “coin fissure,” where visitors toss coins into the crystal-clear waters for good luck.
