Blue Lagoon

Blue Lagoon

No trip to Reykjavík is complete without a visit to the Blue Lagoon. This geothermal spa is the ultimate relaxation spot, where you can soak in warm, mineral-rich waters while enjoying the surreal volcanic landscape. It’s like a giant hot tub but way cooler (or warmer, actually). And if you’re feeling adventurous, try the silica mud mask – it might make you look ten years younger. Or at least it’ll make for a hilarious selfie.

The Blue Lagoon in Iceland is a popular geothermal spa located in a lava field near Grindavík on the Reykjanes Peninsula, about 39 kilometers (24 miles) from Reykjavik. Here are some key details:

Geothermal Spa

The Blue Lagoon is known for its milky-blue, mineral-rich waters. It is heated by the geothermal activity of the nearby Svartsengi power plant. The water temperature averages between 37-40°C (98-104°F) year-round.

Mineral-Rich Waters

The lagoon’s waters contain a unique blend of silica, algae, and minerals. These are believed to have healing properties for the skin. Silica is especially noted for its ability to improve skin conditions like psoriasis. Tip: Keep your hair out of the water unless you apply conditioner first. Your hair will become extremely knotted and damaged if you don’t. If you want proof of this, search it on YouTube.

Facilities

The Blue Lagoon features various amenities, including a modern spa with massage treatments, saunas, steam rooms, a restaurant, and a bar. The Retreat Spa also features a luxury section that offers private lagoon access and exclusive services.

Visiting the Blue Lagoon

History

In 1976, the Svartsengi geothermal power plant formed the lagoon as a byproduct. People started bathing in the water and noticing its beneficial effects on the skin. This lead to the development of the site into a spa.

Location and Accessibility

The Blue Lagoon is easily accessible from both Reykjavik and Keflavik International Airport. This makes it a popular stop for visitors either arriving in or departing from Iceland.

Sustainability

The Blue Lagoon operates with a focus on sustainability, using renewable geothermal energy to heat its waters. They also employ eco-friendly practices in its operations.

The Blue Lagoon offers a unique experience combining natural beauty, relaxation, and wellness. This makes it a must-visit destination for travelers to Iceland.
