Café Loki

Kaffi Loki

Foodie Heaven: From Fermented Shark to Delicious Lamb, you can try them all at Café Loki!

Icelandic cuisine is a delightful adventure for your taste buds. It sometimes gets a bad rap for its unusual dishes but isnt this exactly why we travel? To try new things? Well, in Reykjavík, you can sample traditional dishes like hákarl (fermented shark), svið (sheep’s head), and hangikjöt (smoked lamb) at Kaffi Loki.

If you’re feeling brave, give them a try – they’re better than they sound. I like Café Loki for these items. The shark comes in a small quantity so you aren’t committed to a lot of it if you don’t like it.

How Does It Taste

Hákarl (Greenland shark)

This is not for the faint of heart. I’m going to be honest: it smells like cat pee, and it doesn’t taste much better. It’s a bit chewy and rubbery.

Svið (Sheep’s head)

This is actually much milder than you might think. Having a whole sheep’s head delivered to your table on a plate can be a bit off-putting. However, you can also try it as sviðasulta , a chunky pâté with the meat in gelatin.

Plokkfiskur (Fish and potatoes)

I really liked this one! It is a fish stew that is mashed and mixed with potatoes and a type of white sauce.

But if you prefer something a bit less adventurous, Reykjavík also offers an array of world-class restaurants serving everything from fresh seafood to gourmet burgers. Just remember to save room for dessert – Icelandic pastries are to die for.
