This is a small town located on the opposite side of Martha’s Vineyard from Oak Bluffs and Edgartown. I usually rent a car, transportation to that side of the island is very easy and takes about 35 to 40 mins.
There are public buses that can take you very easily as well. This is a more rural part of the island. Chilmark is known for being a thriving fishing village with access to the freshest seafood coming in right off the boats.
We were able to get some wonderful sashimi-grade tuna that had just been brought in.
An older gentleman runs this little hut and sells tuna until it is gone.
Make sure you visit around mid-afternoon to grab some. It’s delicious!
We picked up a quart of chowder and a quart of lobster bisque at the Larsen’s Fish Market and it was delicious!
If you are renting a house on the island pick up some fresh seafood to prepare at your residence. If not, grab a pint or quart of the chowder or bisque and enjoy it on the beach or at a nearby picnic bench.
There are some wonderful hiking trails and beaches close by that are worth a stop. The coast guard station is nearby as well.
