Faraglioni Capri Italy

No doubt you have seen in any photos of Capri, the large rock formations that sit near the coastline of the island. May I present, the famous, Faraglioni.

Faraglioni Capri Italy

Legend has it…

According to local lore, the Faraglioni, Capri rock formations derive their name from the ancient Greek word ‘phraos’ meaning ‘lighthouse.’ This is because they were used for centuries as a signal spot for sailors, who lit fires on the rocks to guide ships to safety. As a result of their historical significance to the community, the Faraglioni rocks are not merely a tourist attraction, but a meaningful piece of local history.

About the rocks

The Faraglioni rocks have been formed over millions of years through a process of erosion, where the wind and sea spray gradually shaped the rocks into their distinctive formations. These rocks were originally caves and archways, but they are now completely isolated from the mainland island due to erosion.

The rocks range between 80 and 150 meters in height, stretching up to deliver an impressive sight. Each formation has its own individual name, with Stella (cue Streetcar Named Desire) being the first rock attached to the coastline cliff. The middle rock is named Faraglione di Mezzo, and the last rock, also known as the arch, is Faraglione di Fuori.

When people think of this amazing natural wonder, they usually only remember the three prominent rock formations, but in reality, there is a fourth rock. This formation, called Monacone, is located further away from the main rocks and is named after the sea cows that used to inhabit the area, but are now extinct.

Best places to see the Faraglioni

Some of the best places to see these dramatic formations are from a boat or from some of the beach clubs, some of which are very close to the formations themselves.
