One of Reykjavík’s most iconic landmarks is Hallgrímskirkja. A church that looks like it could launch into space at any moment. It is one of the most visited places by tourists in Iceland.
This architectural marvel stands as a testament to Icelandic creativity and ingenuity. Iceland’s basalt lava flow inspired the exterior, which took over 40 years to build. It was also designed to resemble Thor’s Hammer, the handle facing up, as a nod to Iceland’s religious history. The architect himself passed away in 1950 leaving the church unfinished. Other architects tried to do their best to complete the work but it took many years to finish it. The church was finally consecrated on October 26, 1986.
The interior of Hallgrímskirkja is relatively simple and elegant. It has a large pipe organ that was installed in 1992. The organ has 5,275 pipes, weighs over 25 tons and is used for various concerts and services.
Take an elevator up 240 feet to the top for a panoramic view of the city. It will leave you breathless (and maybe a little dizzy).
And don’t forget to take a selfie with the statue of Leif Erikson out front. He discovered America before Columbus, after all. Around 1,000 A.D., the Icelandic sagas mention that Leif discovered North America about 500 years before Christopher Columbus did. The statue was a gift from the United States on the 1,000th anniversary of the founding of the Althing Parliament in 1930.
