The Carp Castle, as it is also known, was built in the center of the city. This is a direct contrast to most of the other castles that are constructed on hilltops. Hiroshima was first developed as a castle town that held the political and economic center of the city. Erected in 1589 by a feudal lord, Mori Terumoto, the castle was sadly destroyed, much like the rest of the city, by the atomic bomb.
The castle was reconstructed thirteen years later and gives visitors a wonderful view of the city from the top floor. During my time in Hiroshima, the castle was closed due to interior restoration projects, but I highly recommend visiting it. Especially since it is only a 15-minute walk from Peace Park.
