Icelandic Phallological Museum

Icelandic Phallological Museum

Who Doesn’t Love a Good Penis Museum?

Reykjavík is home to some unique and quirky museums that you won’t find anywhere else. I have to say that this is the oddest one I have personally ever visited. The Icelandic Phallological Museum boasts the world’s most extensive collection of penises and penile parts. Yes, you read that correctly. It’s bizarre, educational, and definitely a conversation starter.

Collection:

The museum houses over 280 specimens from more than 90 different species, including whales, seals, bears, and other land and sea mammals. It also has some mythological specimens, including those purportedly from elves and trolls.

History:

Founded in 1997 by Sigurður Hjartarson, the museum originally started as a private collection. Hjartarson’s interest in phallology began when he was given a bull’s penis as a boy. The museum has since grown significantly and moved to a more prominent location in Reykjavik.

Human Specimen:

In 2011, the museum received its first human specimen, donated by a 95-year-old Icelandic man who had expressed a wish to contribute to the collection.

Exhibits:

The exhibits are displayed in glass cases, and the museum also features art and artifacts related to the theme. Humorous elements throughout make the museum both educational and entertaining.

Purpose:

The museum aims to provide an educational experience and to remove taboos surrounding the subject. It explores the biological and cultural aspects of penises in a scientific yet approachable manner.

The Icelandic Phallological Museum attracts visitors from around the world, drawn by its curiosity and the chance to learn about an unusual aspect of natural history. And if this is not your thing, check out the National Museum of Iceland or the Saga Museum for a deep dive into Iceland’s fascinating history.
