“Potcakes” is the given name of the island where dogs roaming around the Turks and Caicos and the Bahamas. The mission of this rescue is to reduce the number of homeless Potcakes on the island and find them loving homes.
The name was given to the dogs because the locals fed the ‘caked’ remains of food from their cooking pots to the dogs. The Bahama’s Kennel Club recognizes the Potcake as a breed. While no one knows the exact mix of each dog found on the island, the breeds that normally make up a Potcake are Labrador, German Shepherd, and Fox Terrier breeds.
While you are visiting, you can volunteer to take these little cuties on a “socialization walk”. The rescue tries to introduce the puppies to new people, situations, and smells. It gets them used to being handled and they get to leave the rescue building and enjoy some fresh air. Sometimes, it is less of a walk and more cuddle time. They also attempt to work with the local government and the community, but there seem to be some challenges. Since there is no animal shelter in the Turks and Caicos, they literally take these pups into their own homes until a permanent one can be found.
These dogs, if left on the streets, constantly fight starvation, car strikes, intentional poisoning, and dying from easily treatable diseases.
