This is the world-renowned Christmas Village to visit that you have, no doubt, seen on all the postcards and advertisements for Europe’s Christmas markets. It usually runs for four weeks beginning at the end of November and lasting until just before Christmas Day.
The town creates a magical atmosphere with Franconian-style huts and decorations. Music is always playing with choruses singing traditional Christmas carols. Visitors mill about the 50 stalls that are selling culinary treats and colorful gifts.
The first Christmas market in the town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber can be traced back to the 15th century. Most of the customs and traditions that were started back then continued into modern times.
Make sure you partake in the hot WHITE mulled glühwein, this is a Franconian specialty and will excite your palate with notes of cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, and brown sugar. It tastes much different from its red counterpart served in the other markets around Europe. Also, try the crispy grilled or fried Bratwürste and heavily seasoned Lebkuchen (gingerbread).
The town itself transforms into a winter fairytale wonderland by stringing thousands of fairy lights and hordes of decorations on almost every building, light pole, and structure in the town.
