The striking steel sculpture on Reykjavik’s picturesque waterfront, resembling a Viking longship, is called “Solfarid” or “The Sun Voyager” and was created by the artist Jón Gunnar Arnason. Jón stated that he had a spiritual vison where he saw the sculpture in front of him and this inspired him.
Local residents often take leisurely walks along the shoreline, enjoying the breathtaking view of the bay with Mount Esja in the background. The sculpture is also a favorite spot for tourists, providing an excellent photo opportunity, especially at sunset.

Despite common belief, the Sun Voyager does not depict a Viking ship. It actually represents a dream boat and pays homage to the sun, symbolizing hope, progress, and freedom. The sculpture emerged as the winning piece in a competition sponsored by the district association in 1986 to commemorate Reykjavik’s 200-year anniversary.
Jón Gunnar was battling leukemia when the full-scale Sun Voyager was being created. Sadly, he passed away in April 1989, a year before its installation in its current location. Some have suggested that the sculpture should be viewed as a vessel that transports souls to the afterlife. The artist’s original intention was for it to symbolize a dream boat, representing light and hope.
Set against the majestic Mount Esja, the Sun Voyager offers a stunning backdrop for photography. It is one of Reykjavik’s most popular attractions due to its gorgeous location and spectacular nature.
