This museum displays the history and technology of sword making in Japan. The katana swords that were famously wielded by samurais up until about 150 years ago have a stellar reputation for their sharpness and grace. The katana is the weapon that is most thought of when Japanese warriors come to mind. This museum was established in 1948 to preserve this part of the culture and artistry that Japan is known for.
The building itself is quite interesting. It was created by Fumihiko Maki who also designed the National Museum of Modern Art Kyoto and 4 World Trade Center, New York. Unfortunately, it was raining the day I visited, but I would recommend checking out the rooftop garden that provides a wonderful view of the city.
